#BookTok Display
The picture above is of the window/book display showcasing the #BookTok hashtag which is searchable on TikTok's "discover" page.  The #BookTok hashtag has become quite the big thing on TikTok where users can find lots of videos to watch and "Booktokkers" to follow revolving around literature.  The "BooTok" is having a big impact on the publishing industry especially for YA literature.  Many previously unknown authors/books have gone viral this way causing a huge increase in sales for these individuals.  Many authors (Victoria Aveyard) and even publishers (PenguinTeen) are trying to create their own BookTok videos or convince influencers to feature their books on their accounts.  This display was created again by the ever amazing student helpers Addy Powers and Sydney Jones.  It has been such a delight to have them in the library and to provide their ideas on how we can reach more of our students with reading!

Saint Patrick's Day Display
The picture above is of our St. Patrick's Day book display.  If you look closely you will notice that all the books have some shade of green associated with it to symbolize one of the best holidays of the year.  I'm really hoping that students/staff checked one of these out on St. Patrick's if they were without green that day!

Author of the Month Challenge
Every month we have a Author of the Month contest where students have the opportunity to guess the author based on clues provided.  Students with the correct guess are placed in a box and randomly selected to win our free book written by the author. Last month we didn't have anyone win the contest so we pushed back the author to March to give our students another chance to guess and win a book.  Please encourage students to fill out an entry form.  Students are free to use any available resource, excluding myself, to figure out who the author might be based on the clues.

STEAM ROOM For You

 Perler Beads

  • Perler Beads are little plastic beads that can be fused together by ironing them with ironing paper to create endless amounts of different types of images that look a little like a pixelated illustration.
  •  Different kits can help students to create 3D like items and teach about geometry, symmetry, fractions and more!  Also great for students who like to create things and take them home.

Glowing Bunnies: Why We're making hybrids, chimeras, and clones by jeff campbell
Genre: nonfiction
Location: In a Box...hopefully coming in April

With modern genetic technologies, science fiction's "what if?" has become the scientist's "why not?" Bioengineering has the potential to remake animals in almost any way we can imagine, and it's being used to solve a range of urgent global problems, including climate change, species extinctions, the destruction of natural habitats, and human health issues. But just because we can do all these things, does that mean we should? In the pages of Glowing Bunnies!? you will encounter some of the strange and wonderful genetically modified animals of tomorrow. Learn why scientists are going to such lengths to mess with genes and what the ethical and health-related consequences might be. By understanding both the science and the stakes, you too can judge the potential of this budding science to save---or ruin---the world. Presented as a compendium of existing and proposed creatures, this book describes the animals being created, the scientific techniques involved, and each animal's purpose. Additionally, it addresses bioethics, unintended consequences, and animal welfare.

Text to epitext: expanding students' comprehension, engagement, and media literacy
Genre: Professional
Location: middle school Professional section

This volume explains how analyzing textual elements that aren't part of the text but connected to it can be used with K-16 students to improve comprehension, engagement, critical thinking, and media literacy.
Beginning with an introduction that briefly explains Genette's theory of paratext and discusses the functions of epitext theory, this book comprises theory-to-practice chapters that showcase ways in which teachers and librarians can use elements independent of a text to discuss texts and media with students. Chapters include a practitioner's section specifying practical approaches and explanations for how to use epitext.
Scaffolding an application of theory to practice, this title provides educators with an original approach to increasing literacy engagement and integration as well as for increasing media literacy and critical thinking. It includes practical ideas for using epitext in the classroom to promote critical thinking and for collaboration between teachers and librarians. It also includes editorial sidebars that provide additional "how-to" ideas, support deep thinking, make connections to relevant content in other chapters, and provide examples for students in K-16 classrooms.
  • Explains how epitext can be used to scaffold understanding by providing summaries of content, interpretations, criticisms, and appreciations others share about the work
  • Demonstrates the creative process by following the trail of the production of a work
  • Helps students to explore and use various media to complement and extend their experience of a work
